Making Sex : Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Thomas Laqueur in his book poses the arguement that in the course of medical history there has been a shift from one gender to the current two genders. Prior to the seventeenth century, many scientists believed that there was only one human body and that men and women were the same. This is a highly readable and interesting paper on Laqueur's convincing argument on the one-gender theory. Bibliography lists 1 source.

[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page overview of the processes which affect wound healing, haemostasis, and thrombosis. Discusses the role of factors such as integrin and fibrogen as well as various inflammatory metabolites, neurtophils, and proteolytic enzymes which relate either directly or indirectly to membrane structure. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Memory: A Neurological Viewpoint
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page discussion of the neurological and environmental processes involved in memory formation and utilization. Emphasizes that the physiology of the phenomena of memory formation is extremely complex. It is a process which is directly associated with the hippocampus area of the brain and involves a number of neurological interactions between the hippocampus and its various components. Injury to the hippocampus area of the brain, whether through physical trauma or disease such as Alzheimers, results in detriment to spatial and non-spatial learning, serial learning, memory, and tasks such as passive avoidance performance. Bibliography lists 18 sources.

Motor Skills Development: Neuronal Function and the Impact of Cerebral Palsy
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page overview of neuronal function in relation to motor skills. Delineates the impact of cerebral palsy on motor skill development. Concludes that the exact causes of cerebral palsy are not known. What is known, however, is that the condition is characterized by impeded neuronal function and that this impedance translates to poor motor skill development. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Oxytocin
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper describing the purposes and effects of oxytocin. Oxytocin is one of two hormones produced in the hypothalamus and released by the pituatary glands. It is called the "touch hormone" because it has been found to be associated with the bonding that occurs between mother and child. Studies using this hormone in inducing labor are reported. Pressure Points and Human Physiology
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page discussion of pressure points. Defines pressure points and discusses the physiology behind the various sensations which are associated with either intentional or unintentional stimulation of these pressure points. Provides specific examples of ailments and illnesses associated with several pressure points and discusses the role of acupressure and acupuncture in pain relief and in the treatment of various conditions. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Research Proposal # 2
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper proposing specific research. One of the perplexing realities of the body of knowledge surrounding some of the paths of differentiation and affinities of specific molecules and specific genes is that they frequently behave in ways unexpected under current theory. Despite the fact that immunoglobulin (Ig) and T-cell receptor genes use the same recombinases, Ig genes are functionally rearranged only in B-cells and TCR genes only in T-cells. The basis for this lineage specificity of antigen receptor gene expression is still not well understood. The purpose of this proposed research is to attempt to determine why the genes are arranged only in the narrowly specified cell types. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Review of the 1998 Article: 'Mission Control - Politics, Not Size, Is the Real Threat to Megaprojects at NASA'
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses NASA's Apollo I, Apollo XIII, and The Challenger disasters and whether or not there was a common thread in the various decision making processes that ultimately led to the problems encountered by each of the missions. No secondary sources.
